Dr. Arnau Busquets, coordinator of the Research Group on Cellular Mechanisms in Physiological and Pathological Behavior at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, has been selected in the Leonardo grants to support science and culture of excellence, awarded by the BBVA Foundation. In total, 58 projects have been selected, 18 of which in Catalonia. The project led by Dr. Busquets, 'Identifying brain circuits involved in emotional recognition', has been one of the six winners in this edition in the category of Biology and Biomedicine. The aim of the project is to identify the specific brain circuits involved in empathy processes that may be involved in complex social deficits observed in some neurodevelopmental disorders or neurodegenerative diseases. To identify them, a specific mouse model and pharmacogenetic techniques will be used.

Researchers from the Neuroscience Research Program, in conjunction with the University of Minnesota in the United States, will conduct the first meta-analysis with individual data on this issue. They will analyze data from more than 30,000 people in the United States and four European countries. The aim is to obtain recommendations so that governments can establish dietary guidelines to prevent the onset of diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Is there any type of diet that really works to prevent cognitive decline? Despite all the publications on this question, the scientific evidence is not conclusive. For this reason, the Institute for the Advancement of Foord and Nutrition Sciences (IAFNS), in the United States, a body that acts as an advisor to the US government, has commissioned the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and the Epidemiology and Community Health Division of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health to conduct the first meta-analysis with individual data on the question.

The laboratory director, Dr. Rosa Ventura Alemany, has been invited to join different expert committees of the agency starting this year. Dr. Ventura will be a member of the expert committee of anti-doping laboratories, which has the function of managing and monitoring the accreditation of laboratories and updating the regulations of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In addition, she will also be a member of the working group on the use of dried blood spots (DBS) in doping controls and of the MRPL (minimum required performance levels) working group, which defines the detection limits that laboratories have to achieve for the different substances prohibited in sport in order to perform effective doping controls.

We are pleased to announce the official launch of the MARMetabolomics service, a pioneering initiative in the field of metabolomics at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute. MARMetabolomics is an advanced platform developed by the Applied Metabolomics Research Group (LIMA), which has extensive experience in the development of analytical methods for the determination of metabolites (small molecules involved in metabolic reactions that take place in biological systems) in both non-invasive (urine, breast milk, hair or cultures) and invasive (CSF, blood or tissues) matrices and their application in the field of health. The platform is a member of the European Infrastructure for Translational Medicine (EATRIS), the Spanish Metabolomics Network and the multidisciplinary center TECNIO, BAPP.

The Anti-Doping Laboratory of Catalonia was visited last week by a delegation of the Board of Directors of the Catalan Association of Sports Directors (ACDE). ACDE is an association that brings together leaders, federations and professionals in the world of sport in Catalonia while providing them with the best tools to develop their role and promote excellence in the management and values of sport. The delegation was formed by Pere Sust (President of ACDE), Jordi Durá (Secretary), Francisco Sanahuja, Miquel Torres, Pilar Xifré, Manuel Martínez and Judith Martínez, all of them with extensive and recognized links to Catalan and international sports federations and organizations, and was received by the IMIM management and the Laboratory management. The Associació Catalana de Dirigents de l'Esport (ACDE) awarded the distinction of Best Professional Leader to Dr. Rosa Ventura Alemany, director of the Anti-Doping Laboratory of Catalonia of the Hospital del Mar Institute of Medical Research. The distinction recognizes her work leading the Laboratory, one of the 30 laboratories accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency in the world, and as coordinator of the Research Group on doping control in sport. It also recognizes the Laboratory's work in conducting doping controls for the 2018 Mediterranean Games in Tarragona, and in the management of athletes' biological passports. Finally, it recognizes the relevant scientific results achieved in recent years by the Research Group coordinated by Dr. Ventura Alemany.

Monday 25 July marks the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of the Barcelona Olympic Games, which represented a historic milestone for the city. During this great event, the Anti-Doping Laboratory of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) was entrusted with the anti-doping controls of the athletes at both the Barcelona 92 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The laboratory was set up in 1985 as part of the Barcelona Olympic bid. Its designation as an Olympic laboratory allowed the modernization of the facilities and equipment of both the laboratory itself and the IMIM. The laboratory took up anarea of 1100 m2, and during the Games it worked 24 hours a day. In total, close to 110 people were involved in the anti-doping work, considering the laboratory staff, guest scientific staff, volunteers and support staff.

On 4 February, the XXIV Olympic Winter Games will be inaugurated in Beijing, which this year will be held under very strict COVID-19 control protocols. Three scientists from the IMIM Anti-Doping Laboratory, Rosa Ventura, Sergi Coll and Lídia Requena, will be travelling to Beijing to work in the Olympic laboratory. Rosa Ventura will be involved in the management and supervision group, Sergi Coll will be working on the detection of anabolic steroids, and Lídia Requena will be concentrating on the detection of hormones (erythropoietin, growth hormone). The Beijing Laboratory will analyse 3000 samples over the Olympic Games and another 600 during the Paralympic Games. This high volume of samples requires a great deal of analytical equipment and a large number of specialised professionals organised into shifts working around the clock.

From 2022, the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) list of prohibited substances and methods in sport is to include important changes regarding the use of glucocorticoids in sport. From this point on, all injectable methods will be prohibited during competitions, in addition to oral and rectal administration. Other ways of receiving the medication, such as via inhalation, intranasal or dermatological routes, will continue to be permitted if their use is necessary for therapeutic reasons. There will still be no restrictions on the use of glucocorticoids in out-of-competition periods. Criteria have also been defined to improve the safety of glucocorticoid administration for therapeutic reasons. Firstly, the distinction between prohibited and permitted routes of administration has been improved by defining a specific information concentration for each glucocorticoid. Secondly, blanking periods after prohibited treatments have been defined so that those performed in out-of-competition periods close to competitions do not lead to false positive results in samples collected during competitions.

The Director of the Addictions Process at INAD and researcher at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute becomes a member of the executive committee of this organization that promotes knowledge and research on dual pathology. The congress of the World Association on Dual Disorders (WADD) approved at its congress, held in Paris between December 7 and 9, the incorporation of Dr. Marta Torrens to its executive committee. Thus, the Director of the Addictions Process of the Institute of Neuropsychiatry and Addictions of the Hospital del Mar (INAD) and coordinator of the Addictions Research Group of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), will participate in the organization's decision-making, such as the organization of congresses, training courses and publications.
