Camille Lassale obtains one of the 15 postdoctoral scholarships from the La Caixa Foundation

Junior Leader Fellowship - Retaining

Researcher Camille Lassale from the IMIM Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Genetics Research Group has obtained one of the 15 "Junior Leader Fellowship - Retaining" grants from the La Caixa Foundation to study the impact of nutrition on epigenetic markers. This call is very competitive; of the 399 applications received, only 15 researches have been awarded throughout Spain and Portugal, and of these 15, there are only four women.

The Junior Leader Fellowships postdoctoral research program aims to hire excellent researchers of any nationality who wish to continue their research career in Spain or Portugal. The objectives of this program are to promote innovative and high-quality research in Spain and Portugal and support the best scientific talent by providing them with a competitive and attractive environment in which to conduct excellent research.

With this grant, which will last three years, Dr. Lassale aims to discover how diet and physical activity cause changes in DNA structure without modifying the sequence of letters in genes. These DNA changes influence how our genes are read and their level of expression, which determines their ability to generate proteins or not. According to the researcher, "this can have many consequences on our health. That is why the second objective of my project is to understand these consequences, particularly on cardiovascular health". Better understanding the mechanisms of action of nutrition can generate new therapeutic targets to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

The fellowship is endowed with €305,100, which allows the researcher to have freedom when working and is also an excellent opportunity to establish her group in the future.
