Our second hypothesis within the same line of investigation is that postoperative peritoneal infection (anastomotic dehiscence and intra-abdominal abscess) is associated with an increased angiogenic response. This fact might explain the result of recent reports showing that postoperative septic complications are associated with higher rates of overall and local recurrence and cancer-specific mortality.
To probe this hypothesis we have designed an experimental study in a combined model of colon cancer and peritoneal infection in mice (AECC grant 449 2006-2007) and simultaneously a cohort study with paired controls in humans investigating the expression of genes involved in inflammation and angiogenesis by microarrays (FIS PI060854 2007-2009).
