April, 20th and 21st, 2009 - General information
The first assembly meeting of the European Project HITEA (Health Effects of Indoor Pollutants: Integrating microbial, toxicological and epidemiological approaches), will be held at CREAL. Jordi Sunyer and Jan-Paul Zock lead two of the project work packages. In this meeting, what has been done until now will be presented, and a plan for the future will be drawn.

With the aim of fostering life science communication to the general public, this year the PRBB wants to work not only with students, but also with scientists, housewives, lawyers, painters: with any person who is interested in science and wants to help in its communication. Thanks to the award “Premi El·lipse” they will be able to communicate science to the general public, be it by words or graphically.

Last week the first Barcelona School on Biomedical Informatics came to a close with a noteworthy success in attendance and achievement of objectives. It was promoted from the Research Unit on Biomedical Informatics and organised in collaboration with the European projects of the 6th BioBridge and QosCosGrid programme and with the network of excellence of the seventh Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) programme, as well as the Spanish Bioinformatics Institute (INB).
On February 3rd and 4th, a group of European experts will lay the foundations for an in-depth analysis of the public health challenges relating to mental disorders in Europe. This is the aim of a project funded by the European Commission’s Directorate General of Public Health and Consumer Affairs (SANCO) and coordinated by IMIM-Hospital del Mar.

The ABCtr MicroG project was recently selected, from among many other European initiatives, as one of the four best projects to fly with the European Space Agency (ESA) this October on its 51st campaign of parabolic flights as part of the “Fly your Thesis!” project. This project offers PhD and master’s degree students the opportunity to design, build and carry out a scientific experiment in microgravity.

Coordinated by URSS and funded by DG Sanco, the EPREMED project contributed to the improvement of mental health policy information in Europe through the in-depth analysis of the prevalence, risk factors, burden and service use of individuals with mental disorders.
31 October 2008 and 1 November 2008 - General information
CREAL welcomes the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Public Health (IJPH) to their annual meeting. Both Editors-in-chief, Thomas Abel and Thomas Kohlmann and 6 of the 8 Associate Editors (Louise Potvin, David McQueen, Petra Kolip, Bremen Germany; Andrea Madarasova-Geckova, Herman Van Oyen and Nino Kuenzli) will discuss the state and progress of IJPH.

It is an activity targetted at early stage researchers in the field of translational bioinformatics or biomedical informatics. In its first edition, the school will be based on the computational tools developed within the framework of two FP6 STREP projects that will be about to finish: QosCosGrid and BioBridge. The European Respiratory Society (ERS) rewarded this year Esther Barreiro with the Society's annual award for research in the field of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) 2008, for her study of the role of oxidative stress in the respiratory and peripheral muscle dysfunction of COPD patients.
