Last week the first Barcelona School on Biomedical Informatics came to a close with a noteworthy success in attendance and achievement of objectives. It was promoted from the Research Unit on Biomedical Informatics and organised in collaboration with the European projects of the 6th BioBridge and QosCosGrid programme and with the network of excellence of the seventh Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) programme, as well as the Spanish Bioinformatics Institute (INB).

The collaboration agreement between CREAL and the University of Arizona will be presented on the 16th of February at 12:30 h. in the Auditorium PRBB. The act aims to establish a collaboration plan on the research being conducted by the two centres on asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonar Disease after the success of the agreement signed last year between CREAL and INSERM of France.

Within the framework of the REGICOR (Registre Gironí del Cor) study, an international consortium of North American and European researchers, including researchers from the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) and the Hospital Josep Trueta in Girona, has discovered three new genetic traits linked to acute myocardial infarction and has confirmed another six identified in previous studies on this disease.

Although physical exercise has beneficial effects for all, even those diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a new study warns that levels of oxidative stress much higher than those at rest conditions may occur in the leg muscles of patients with severe and very severe COPD. The study was carried out in collaboration with Dr. Esther Barreiro’s group at the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar), together with Dr. Joaquim Gea, head of the Pneumology service at the Hospital del Mar and with Dr. Josep Roca, Director of the Lung Function Unit at the Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS.

For the first time, a study has evaluated the contribution of the Mediterranean diet on the perception that people have of their own physical and mental health. The report concludes that the positive effects of the Mediterranean diet are not provided only by the composition of the food ingested, but also by the lifestyle associated with this diet: eating at home more, spending time preparing the food, sharing meals, etc.; elements that contribute to improving the perception of an individual’s well-being.

On February 3rd and 4th, a group of European experts will lay the foundations for an in-depth analysis of the public health challenges relating to mental disorders in Europe. This is the aim of a project funded by the European Commission’s Directorate General of Public Health and Consumer Affairs (SANCO) and coordinated by IMIM-Hospital del Mar.

An extensive report to be published this February in the prestigious journal Addiction shows the results of a study about the evolution of the incidence of heroin use in Spain from 1971 to 2005. This exhaustive work, spanning 35 years of the history of an addiction, included the analysis of data from 167,753 individuals with a heroin addiction problem.

The ABCtr MicroG project was recently selected, from among many other European initiatives, as one of the four best projects to fly with the European Space Agency (ESA) this October on its 51st campaign of parabolic flights as part of the “Fly your Thesis!” project. This project offers PhD and master’s degree students the opportunity to design, build and carry out a scientific experiment in microgravity.

A study by the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) and the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) suggests that a diet moderately rich in fish (2 or 3 times a week) during pregnancy is associated with an increase in children’s intellectual capacity later in life.
