  First international index developed to predict suicidal behavior

  Although thousands of people commit suicide worldwide each year, researchers and doctors do not have any method for evaluating a person's likelihood of thinking about or trying to commit suicide. An international group of scientists, in which the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) has participated, has devised the first risk index in order to prevent suicides.

  New leads on the genetic origin of coronary artery disease

  An International study to be published online on the 6th March in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics identifies 13 new genetic characteristics associated with coronary artery disease.Genetic factors are thought to explain about 40% of the risk of the population presenting with coronary artery disease.

  Having a haemodynamics laboratory almost halves the number of infarction deaths

  A study published in the latest edition of Revista Española de Cardiología (REC, Spanish Journal of Cardiology) and carried out by researchers from the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) in Barcelona and from the Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona, highlights the importance of increasing the number of haemodynamics laboratories

  The Anti-Doping Laboratory ¡n Barcelona, recipient of the 2010 National Award for Research in Sports Medicine

  The 13th National Award for Research in Sports Medicine, awarded by the University of Oviedo and sponsored by Cajastur for the best research work in 2010, has been given to the work presented by the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) in Barcelona.

  The IMIM is participating in a research project on NK cell activation

  

  The aim of the CLINK project is to develop various protocols for the “in vitro” activation and expansion of a type of immune system cell which is important for combating certain infections and tumours, called a natural killer cell (NK cell). The consortium will attempt to find an ideal system for activating these cells which would allow the largest number of cells to be obtained from one single donor and at the same time provide them with greater ability to kill tumours

  GRIB Members Win an International Competition

  

  Laura López, Cristian Obiol-Pardo and Jana Selent, members of the Computer Aided Drug Design (CADD) group of the Biomedical IT Research Group (GRIB, of the UPF-IMIM) have won first prize for the best prediction of the ligands established by the GPCR protein, a molecule which intervenes in many cell processes and interacts with half of all known drugs.

  Jordi Mestres at the Editorial Board of the new publication "Scientific Reports" Jordi Mestres, head of Chemogenomics laboratory of GRIB (IMIM-UPF) has been appointed member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports, the new primary research publication from the publishers of Nature, covering all areas of the natural sciences –biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences.

  Identification of new therapeutic weapons against the most aggressive form of breast cancer: objective of an ambitious investigation project

  Triple-negative breast cancer (Estrogen Receptor-Negative, Progesterone Receptor-Negative, and HER-Negative) is a type of breast cancer with clinical characteristics and specific pathologies that represents a relevant clinic problem, as it affects around 20% of all women with breast cancer, and especially those who are young.

  25 years of the IMIM Anti-Doping Control Laboratory

  

  In November, the IMIM Anti-Doping Control Laboratory, directed by Dr. Jordi Segura, celebrated 25 years of history. Ever since it was first accredited by the International Olympic Committee in 1985, its objective has always been to offer high quality, reliable services. It is currently made up of a team of around 30 people from various disciplines and origins, all of whom have extensive experience in the doping field.

  The IMIM hosts the meeting of the Laboratory Committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)

  

  In connection with this, the meeting of the WADA Lab Committee, chaired by Toni Pascual, took place in the IMIM on the 9th and 10th December past. This committee is made up of an international group of experts on doping and is the advisory body in charge of all aspects related to the work carried out by anti-doping control laboratories on a global scale
