Although thousands of people commit suicide worldwide each year, researchers and doctors do not have any method for evaluating a person's likelihood of thinking about or trying to commit suicide. An international group of scientists, in which the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) has participated, has devised the first risk index in order to prevent suicides.

An International study to be published online on the 6th March in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics identifies 13 new genetic characteristics associated with coronary artery disease.Genetic factors are thought to explain about 40% of the risk of the population presenting with coronary artery disease.

The aim of the CLINK project is to develop various protocols for the “in vitro” activation and expansion of a type of immune system cell which is important for combating certain infections and tumours, called a natural killer cell (NK cell). The consortium will attempt to find an ideal system for activating these cells which would allow the largest number of cells to be obtained from one single donor and at the same time provide them with greater ability to kill tumours

Laura López, Cristian Obiol-Pardo and Jana Selent, members of the Computer Aided Drug Design (CADD) group of the Biomedical IT Research Group (GRIB, of the UPF-IMIM) have won first prize for the best prediction of the ligands established by the GPCR protein, a molecule which intervenes in many cell processes and interacts with half of all known drugs.

In November, the IMIM Anti-Doping Control Laboratory, directed by Dr. Jordi Segura, celebrated 25 years of history. Ever since it was first accredited by the International Olympic Committee in 1985, its objective has always been to offer high quality, reliable services. It is currently made up of a team of around 30 people from various disciplines and origins, all of whom have extensive experience in the doping field.

In connection with this, the meeting of the WADA Lab Committee, chaired by Toni Pascual, took place in the IMIM on the 9th and 10th December past. This committee is made up of an international group of experts on doping and is the advisory body in charge of all aspects related to the work carried out by anti-doping control laboratories on a global scale
