The attending physician from the Neurology Department and researcher at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute has received the award at the Medical Profession Event of Vallés Oriental, organized by the Barcelona Medical Association. The work 'Epidemiology of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Catalonia: 2015-2020', from the Neurology Department of Hospital del Mar and led by Dr. Bernat Bertran, has won the honorable mention of the Dr. Carles Vallbona i Calbó Award from the Col·legi de Metges de Barcelona. The award ceremony took place on September 18 during the Medical Profession Event of Vallés Oriental, organized by the Vallés Oriental Regional Board of the Barcelona Medical Association (COMB).

The oxidation of low-density lipoproteins present in the blood (LDL) or bad cholesterol opens the door to an increased cardiovascular risk, as this oxidized cholesterol is more likely to deposit in the arteries, leading to the growth of cholesterol plaques that cause arteriosclerosis. Engaging in intense physical activity reduces the oxidation of LDL particles, lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease. Thirty minutes of intense exercise daily reduces oxidized LDL cholesterol by 8 to 10%. However, the effect is only seen in men. Low or moderate intensity exercises do not have the same effect. This is revealed by a study from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Vic-Central University of Catalonia, published in the Revista Española de Cardiología.

For women who have been admitted to a hospital for a mental disorder, the risk of suicide is 48 times higher than in the general female population. For men in the same situation, the risk is 28 times higher, according to a study by the Hospital del Mar Research Institute published in JAMA Network Open. The risk of premature death, meaning dying before the age of 70, is also higher in people hospitalized for a mental disorder. This group has nearly eight times the mortality risk compared to the rest of the population. The study analyzed data from nearly 50,000 people. The disorders with the most impact are depression, cognitive disorders, adjustment and bipolar disorders, and alcohol use.

The Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences, an entity created by the World Health Organization and UNESCO to help advance public health through guidance on research and health policies, has published the report Real-world data and real-world evidence in regulatory decision', in which Dr. Miguel Ángel Mayer, from the Management Control department of Hospital del Mar and its research institute, has participated. The report aims to provide a universal consensus document that can be used to facilitate the harmonization of regulatory standards and definitions, articulate the requirements to support the determination of drug efficacy, and help develop a set of ethical guidelines for real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) by expanding the use of RWD/RWE for decision-making throughout the entire lifecycle of medical products.

A 10% increase in blood sugar levels from the usual raises the likelihood of a poor prognosis by 7% and the chance of death by 10% within three months of the stroke, according to a study published in Cardiovascular Diabetology. The study reviewed data from nearly 3,000 patients treated for this condition at Hospital del Mar. Research will continue to determine if managing glucose levels in this population can improve their prognosis.

Dr. Arnau Busquets, coordinator of the Research Group on Cellular Mechanisms in Physiological and Pathological Behavior at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, has been selected in the Leonardo grants to support science and culture of excellence, awarded by the BBVA Foundation. In total, 58 projects have been selected, 18 of which in Catalonia. The project led by Dr. Busquets, 'Identifying brain circuits involved in emotional recognition', has been one of the six winners in this edition in the category of Biology and Biomedicine. The aim of the project is to identify the specific brain circuits involved in empathy processes that may be involved in complex social deficits observed in some neurodevelopmental disorders or neurodegenerative diseases. To identify them, a specific mouse model and pharmacogenetic techniques will be used.

Dr. Marta Torrens, Emeritus Director of Addictions of the Mental Health Institute of the Hospital del Mar and researcher of her research institute, has been selected by the executive committee of the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA), to be part of its scientific committee. The decision was made on July 4 and Dr. Torrens will be one of the agency's advisors for the next four years. The European Union Agency for Drugs and Drug Addiction is the successor of the former European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, with enhanced capabilities and responsibilities.

Chest ultrasound enables quick and easy identification of patients who may have a worse prognosis due to pneumonia caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection. The published work is a collaboration between Hospital del Mar and Doctors Without Borders, published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine. This diagnostic tool, with proper training and access to portable ultrasound devices, is particularly useful in resource-limited countries due to its ease of bedside use.

The Hospital del Mar Research Institute will be Olympic again. Three of the professionals of the Institute's Anti-Doping Laboratory of Catalonia will work in the Olympic Laboratory during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. They are Sergi Coll and Lídia Requena, who will travel to Paris to work at the Laboratory from July 26 to August 11 during the Olympic Games, and Indira Anselmo, who will work from August 28 to September 8, during the Paralympic Games. Sergi Coll is a specialist in the detection of anabolic steroids, and Lídia Requena and Indira Anselmo are specialists in the detection of hormones (erythropoietin, growth hormone...) and blood transfusions.
