28/09/2010 - Press release
For the first time, a study conducted by the Cardiovascular Risk and Nutrition Research Group at IMIM and the Community Nutrition Research Group - Nutrition Research Foundation (FIN) at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) shows that youth who eat a Mediterranean diet have a smaller waist circumference than those who do not.

Type 2 diabetes is a heart risk factor, along with other factors such as lipid profile, hypertension and obesity. Some studies put the cardiovascular mortality risk in diabetic patients on a par with that presented by non-diabetics who have had a first myocardial infarction. For the first time ever, it has been shown that this is not the case in the south of Europe.
31/08/2010 - Press release
A study led by IMIM researchers in Barcelona has developed a genetic risk indicator that has a linear association with the probability of ischaemic heart disease. This risk indicator is independent of classic cardiovascular risk factors already known and may provide information that is supplementary to them.
4th august 2010 - Press release
An international study which will be published in the next issue of the prestigious journal Nature, in which researchers from the IMIM have participated, has identified 95 genetic variants related to LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Of these 95 associated genetic variants, 59 had not been previously identified.
1 august 2010 - Press release
An international team, led by the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, has identified a new molecular mechanism for the production of antibodies by B-lymphocytes. This finding opens the door to new treatments for autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, and perhaps tumors of the immune system such as lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
22 july 2010 - Press release
An international study, in which researchers from the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) have participated as the only Spanish researchers, has shown that rare genetic variants, which are present in less than 1% of the population, also contribute to determining individual susceptibility to suffer from complex diseases such as hypertriglyceridemia (high levels of triglycerides).

07/07/2010 - General information
According to an international study which IMIM took part, kidney disease is a significant predictor of in-hospital mortality and 30-day mortality in patients who come to the hospital with heart-related chest pain, otherwise known as Non-ST-segment Elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome (NSTE-ACS).
02/03/2010 - Press release
A study carried out by researchers at the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) has shown for the first time that the beneficial effects of virgin olive oil, a rich source of polyphenols in the Mediterranean diet, can cause changes in the manifestation of certain genes involved in atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is a disease where fatty matter is deposited along the walls of the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks or cerebrovascular accidents. This is the first study that proves that the population who lives within 100 metres of a motorway or busy road suffers an acceleration in atherosclerosis more than double of its regular process.

25/01/2010 - General information
Every year since 1996, the American Heart Association lists the top 10 most important scientific advances related to cardiovascular diseases and stroke. This year, the top 10 includes a study involving researchers from the Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Genetics Research Group from IMIM-Hospital del Mar. It was published last June in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics.
