An international collaborative study with the participation of researchers from the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute), has studied whether the link between the levels of HDL cholesterol, commonly called “good cholesterol” and the risk of suffering an acute myocardial infarction is or isn’t causal, by using genetic biomarkers. The article will be published in the prestigious Lancet journal.

The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded scientist Andrea Cerutti, an IMIM researcher and ICREA professor, an advanced grant, with funding of 2 million euros over a five-year period. The objective of the ERC Advanced Grant is to support excellent research projects in the field of science, which are highly innovative and led by prominent researchers with renowned international prestige, who may be from any EU member state or associated country.

For the first time, it has been discovered that neutrophils exist in the spleen without there being an infection. This important finding made by the research group on the Biology of B Cells of IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) in collaboration with researchers from Mount Sinai in New York, has also made it possible to determine that these neutrophils have an immunoregulating role.

Last 14th December an event was held at the PRBB Auditorium; it was organized by the IMIM Group on Cardiovascular Risk and Nutrition to say goodbye to and thank the participants in the PREDIMED study, their involvement, availability and enthusiasm during the four years over which the project has developed (2003-2011).

A study lead by a team of researchers from the Hospital del Mar and its research institute, IMIM, concludes that post-menopausal women with osteoarthritis have a 20% greater risk of experiencing bone fractures due to osteoporosis and are at greater risk of falling –nearly 30% more than post-menopausal women without osteoarthritis

High blood pressure, dyslipidaemia and obesity are the three most prevalent cardiovascular risk factors among Spaniards aged between 35 and 74 years. In addition, these factors occur most commonly in the autonomous regions of Extremadura, the Canaries and Andalusia. Here are some of the conclusions reached by the DARIOS Study.

An International study to be published online on the 6th March in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics identifies 13 new genetic characteristics associated with coronary artery disease.Genetic factors are thought to explain about 40% of the risk of the population presenting with coronary artery disease.
