Neurofunctionality and language Jordi Peña-Casanova

The neurofunctionality of brain and language research group focuses on the study of the relationships between the brain, cognition, behaviour, and emotional states. These relationships belong within the field of focal and diffuse brain pathology, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative diseases.

The traditional lines of work of the unit were focused in the development, normalisation and validation of diagnostic instruments and the cognitive capacity measurement. It is particularly important to highlight the line of work related to the memory and Alzheimer’s disease.

The search activities are done in collaboration with the clinical services of the Hospital del Mar (particularly in neurosurgery and cardiology), the Neuropsychopharmacolgy programme members, other IMIM research groups and other institutions.

Part of the groups’ activity is dedicated to carrying out clinical trials in the field of cognitive disorders, emphasising the following pathologies: Alzheimer’s disease, Mild cognitive disorder, Vascular dementia, Parkinson’s disease and Dementia with Lewy bodies.

It is also fitting to highlight that students from the "Master in Neuropyschology and Neurology of the Behaviour” (Department of Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine) actively participate in the research unit.

The unit collaborates with the Neurosurgical Service (Dr. Gerard Conesa) in cartography studies (mapping) of cognitive functions using electric stimulation of the cerebral cortex in vigil patients. These studies enable us to carry out advanced neurosurgery, with unquestionable benefits for the patient, given that during the surgical operation the cerebral zones related to cognitive functions can be differentiated and protected. The technology implemented in the operating theatre, is used in conjunction with cognitive (Section on Neurology of the Behaviour, Dr.Jordi Peña-Casanova), and neurophysiological studies (Neurophysiology, Dr. Josep Mª Espadaler)
