José Antonio Pascual, member of the Bioanalysis and Analytical Services Research Group of the Neuropsychopharmacology Programme and deputy director of the Anti-doping Control Laboratory, has been re-elected President of the International Paralympic Committee’s Anti-doping Committee for the next 4 years.

A team of student researchers and interns from the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) and the Foundation CIM will conduct a scientific experiment aboard three parabolic flights scheduled by the ESA, on the 3, 4 and 5 November. The experiment intends to improve medical treatment for astronauts through a better understanding of the drug absorption mechanisms in diseases such as cancer and AIDS, will take on board.

The ABCtr MicroG project was recently selected, from among many other European initiatives, as one of the four best projects to fly with the European Space Agency (ESA) this October on its 51st campaign of parabolic flights as part of the “Fly your Thesis!” project. This project offers PhD and master’s degree students the opportunity to design, build and carry out a scientific experiment in microgravity.

Researchers from the Childhood and Environmental Research Group of the Municipal Institute for Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar), a group that is connected to the Paediatrics Service at Hospital del Mar, have used meconium or newborns' first excrement to establish whether the mother consumed drugs during the last two trimesters of pregnancy

According to the results of a study recently published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, ecstasy use causes problems with verbal fluidity, working memory and the speed that information is processed. These effects are long-term and may not disappear, even when use of the drug has ceased.

Last Tuesday 22 July, in the framework of the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF 2008), the session ‘Doping and society: towards the perfect human machine?’ was held, with the aim of providing a general overview of the fight against doping from different viewpoints: scientific, institutional, ethical and the viewpoint of the athletes themselves.

More than 3,000 scientists from all disciplines, politicians and businessmen will participate in 112 conferences and debates with 430 speakers. 20,000 visitors are expected for more than 70 expositions and public events for young people and families. These are some of the figures expected for the third meeting of the multidisciplinary, transverse ESOF2008, EuroScience Open Forum, organised by EuroScience and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI).
