For the first time, a study has evaluated the contribution of the Mediterranean diet on the perception that people have of their own physical and mental health. The report concludes that the positive effects of the Mediterranean diet are not provided only by the composition of the food ingested, but also by the lifestyle associated with this diet: eating at home more, spending time preparing the food, sharing meals, etc.; elements that contribute to improving the perception of an individual’s well-being.

An extensive report to be published this February in the prestigious journal Addiction shows the results of a study about the evolution of the incidence of heroin use in Spain from 1971 to 2005. This exhaustive work, spanning 35 years of the history of an addiction, included the analysis of data from 167,753 individuals with a heroin addiction problem.

A study by the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) and the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) suggests that a diet moderately rich in fish (2 or 3 times a week) during pregnancy is associated with an increase in children’s intellectual capacity later in life.

The study is the first to show that women who are exposed to hairspray in the workplace during the first trimester of pregnancy have more than double the risk of having a son with the genital birth defect hypospadias.The study was carried out in the UK and coordinated by the Imperial College London, with the participation of the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) in Barcelona and University College Cork.

The diagnosis and treatment alone of certain mental illnesses is not enough. In the future the way in which the mentally ill are perceived within their environment must also be taken into consideration. An international study and the first carried out at local level, has shown that one of the associated effects of mental illness is a feeling of shame and social discrimination that sufferers experience simply as a result of being ill.

The Italian Foundation IRCCS Neurological Institute Carlo Besta of Milan coordinated an innovative European research that involved for three years leading international researchers and that will allow the European Union to propose to its member countries a new model for disability policy within both health, statistical and social contexts. In this project has participated the health services research group of IMIM.

By providing fresh information, the new Aphekom project , with the CREAL colaboration, will further elucidate the characteristics and consequences of air pollution for policy and individual decision making across Europe.
There are close links between blood inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), and respiratory function. So reveals a study to be published in the forthcoming issue of the European Respiratory Journal (ERJ), the peer-reviewed publication of the European Respiratory Society (ERS).

Prostate cancer patients treated with this method have a higher quality of life than those treated with external beam radiotherapy or excision of the prostate. The best results obtained by brachytherapy are in regards to sexuality, the area most affected by surgery. External beam radiotherapy, however, is the option that causes the least urinary dysfunction.
