Air pollution, water contamination, persistent organic pollutants, pesticides, metals, and radiofrequencies to name a few have all been linked to adverse health effects such as cancer, respiratory disease and reproductive effects. Mark J Nieuwenhuijsen, Research Professor at CREAL, has co-edited a text book on environmental epidemiology, Environmental Epidemiology: Study Methods and Application.

Prostate cancer patients treated with this method have a higher quality of life than those treated with external beam radiotherapy or excision of the prostate. The best results obtained by brachytherapy are in regards to sexuality, the area most affected by surgery. External beam radiotherapy, however, is the option that causes the least urinary dysfunction.

An international study coordinated by Jordi Alonso, manager of the health care services research group at the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) has revealed that different types of anxiety disorders suffered by adults are associated with lack of care or excessively protective maternal behaviour during the early lives of their children.

Short-term exposure to current levels of ozone in many areas is likely to contribute to premature deaths, says a new National Research Council report, in which Nino Künzli, ICREA professor of the CREAL-IMIM has participated. The evidence is strong enough that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency should include ozone-related mortality in health-benefit analyses related to future ozone standards.

An international study done by the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) and the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) with collaboration from the University of Aarhus in Denmark affirms the known link between pre-natal exposure to paracetamol, especially during the first trimester, and the risk of respiratory problems or the development of asthma in the first seven years of a child’s life.

An international research group has explained, for the first time, the relationship that exists between DNA methylation and the risk of urinary bladder cancer. This study is part of the EPICURO/Spanish Bladder Cancer Study, which since 2003 has worked towards its objective of obtaining more information regarding the causes (genetic and environmental), prevention, prognosis determination and treatment of bladder cancer.
