The SAGITTARIUS clinical trial, led by the Hospital del Mar in Spain, gets underway

The first patients have already begun to enroll in this international project, which seeks to advance in the field of personalized therapy in colon cancer.

The SAGITTARIUS clinical trial has officially begun with the inclusion of the first six patients in the project. Among them, the first at the Hospital del Mar, a collaborating center in the study, which is coordinated in Spain by Dr. Clara Montagut, head of the Gastrointestinal Tumors section of the Medical Oncology Service and coordinator of the Colorectal Cancer Precision Medicine Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute.

The initiative involves 26 hospitals, 13 in Spain, 12 in Italy and one in Germany. Its aim is to advance precision medicine in localized colon cancer through the use of liquid biopsy to improve patient outcomes and quality of life. Dr. Montagut says, "I am very excited about the launch of SAGITTARIUS. It is the starting point to have a significant impact on the treatment of colon cancer patients, giving the right treatment to the right patient and advancing the use of liquid biopsy in clinical research and precision medicine."

The SAGITTARIUS project, which is supported by the European Union's Horizon Program, will recruit patients who have undergone surgery to treat localized colon cancer. At the moment, these people have to undergo chemotherapy after the operation to eliminate possible micrometastases, even if they do not have any, since they cannot be detected by radiological examinations. Hence the importance of having a tool, such as liquid biopsy, to determine which patients can benefit from this treatment.

The clinical trial will involve between 700 and 900 patients from Spain, Germany and Italy. It is coordinated by the Institute of Molecular Oncology of Italy (IFOM), in collaboration with the AIRC Foundation for Cancer Research, also of Italy, the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, Bocconi University, Italy, Digestive Cancers Europe of Belgium, SporeData OU of Estonia, the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology, and the Charité University Hospital Berlin, Germany.
