Last January 16th, to learn about the work carried out by this pioneering center in Spain.
The conseller d'Esports, Berni Álvarez, visited the facilities of the Catalonia Anti-Doping Laboratory at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute on January 16th. He was accompanied by the Secretary General of the Sports Department, Abel García, the Director of the Catalan Sports Council, Carme Bastida, and the Head of the Sports and Health Unit of the Catalan Sports Council, Dr. Daniel Brotons. Dr. Clara Montagut, Deputy Research Director of the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, and Dr. Rosa Ventura, Director of the Catalonia Anti-Doping Laboratory, also joined the visit, along with Dr. Rosa Bergés, Dr. Sergi Coll, and Dr. Imma Figuera, who are responsible for the Laboratory.
The conseller d'Esports was able to witness firsthand the work conducted at the laboratory, which last year analyzed over 13,000 athlete samples, the highest figure in its history, placing it among the ten anti-doping laboratories with the most annual analyses. The visit also showcased the latest advances in detecting prohibited substances in sports, some of which are led by the Catalonia Laboratory, such as the detection of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents using just a single drop of dried blood.
Both parties discussed various aspects to enhance collaboration and ensure that the Catalonia Anti-Doping Laboratory remains at the forefront of the fight against doping and the promotion of clean sports.
