Dr. Joan Carles Monllau and Dr. Xavier Castells become new professors at Universitat Pompeu Fabra

Dr. Joan Carles Monllau, head of the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Service of the Hospital del Mar and researcher of the Group in cellular research in inflammation and cartilage of the Hospital del Mar Research Institute.

Dr. Castells is head of service emeritus of the Epidemiology and Evaluation Service of the Hospital del Mar and investigator of the Epidemiology and Evaluation Research Group of the Hospital del Mar Research Institute.

Dr. Joan Carles Monllau

Dr. Joan Carles Monllau is an orthopedic surgeon specialized in the field of knee surgery. He has been the head of the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Service at Hospital del Mar since 2015. He also serves as scientific director of the Blood and Tissue Bank of Barcelona.

He is the current president of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) and has been president of the Asociación Española d'Artroscòpia. He is a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery (Arthroscopy) and is the author of more than 200 articles in international journals and more than sixty book chapters and has supervised more than forty doctoral theses.



Dr. Xavier Castells

Dr. Castells is a specialist in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. He has been Chief of Service from 1997 to May 2024. Since 2010, he is the president of the Advisory Council of Screening of Catalonia of the Department of Health and member of the advisory board of the Oncology Plan of Catalonia.

He is a member of the European Commission and WHO expert group for breast cancer screening guidelines and the new European Code Against Cancer and is the author of more than 250 journal articles and principal investigator of more than 30 competitive research projects.
