Precision public health aims at focusing interventions where they can be most effective and optimising them for specific scenarios. This goal requires high-resolution real-time tracking of the distribution and spread of diseases, as well as accurate information on their transmission patterns and clinical outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic has seen unprecedented progress on the path to precision epidemiology, with the deployment of tools such as massive sequencing efforts to digital contact tracing, as well as new approaches in data analytics. I will show examples of how genomics and digital Big Data epidemiology can contribute rich insights and improve not only our understanding of infectious diseases, but also the public health toolkit for the next epidemics.
