We invite you to the next IMIM Seminar organized by the Epidemiology and Public Health Program, which will take place on Thursday 11/25/2021 at 14:00 h in hybrid format. The title will be "Individualized breast cancer risk assessment models applied to population-based screening mammography", by Dr. Javier Louro, researcher in the Epidemiology and Evaluation research Group of IMIM and researcher at REDISSEC (Red de Investigación en Servicios de Salud en enfermedades crónicas).
Abstract
Mammographic screening has been shown to reduce mortality from breast cancer. The results of the effectiveness of population-based screening are controversial in terms of the balance between mortality reduction and adverse effects and, to improve this balance, current evidence supports personalized screening. This new branch of research presents a new challenge, the need to broaden current information on breast cancer risk factors and the estimation of individual risk assessment models through the analysis of large population-based databases. This session will explain the current situation regarding breast cancer risk assessment models, going in depth on what models currently exist, how they are created and the different types and measures of validation, always in the context of the mammographic screening personalization.

Javier Louro, MSc, PhD is a researcher of the Epidemiology and Evaluation Group of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute. He holds a PhD in Methodology of Biomedical Research and Public Health, a Master's degree in Statistics and Operations Research and a Bachelor's degree on Mathematics.
During his professional career he has provided statistical advice in many different fields of health research, but his professional career has been focused on breast cancer screening research. In this field his PhD was aimed at estimating a woman's risk of developing invasive breast cancer applying individualized risk models based on her personal risk factors in order to personalize breast cancer screening.
He is currently the Project and Data Manager for the recruitment in Spain of the EU-funded clinical trial MyPeBS. This unique international clinical study compares a personalised risk-based screening strategy (based on the individual women's risk of developing breast cancer) to standard screening among 85,000 women aged 40 to 70 in 6 countries: Belgium, France, Israel, Italy, United Kingdom and Spain.
He also combines research with educational work, since he teaches biostatistics in a Higher Education Cycle (HNC).
