The laboratory director, Dr. Rosa Ventura Alemany, has been invited to join different expert committees of the agency starting this year. Dr. Ventura will be a member of the expert committee of anti-doping laboratories, which has the function of managing and monitoring the accreditation of laboratories and updating the regulations of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In addition, she will also be a member of the working group on the use of dried blood spots (DBS) in doping controls and of the MRPL (minimum required performance levels) working group, which defines the detection limits that laboratories have to achieve for the different substances prohibited in sport in order to perform effective doping controls.

This is revealed by the largest observational study in this field carried out to date in the world. It is published in the journal Nutrients. The work is based on data from the UK Biobank database and has made it possible to analyze information from more than 260,000 people. Its conclusions may allow a more detailed definition of future studies on omega-3 supplementation for the prevention of dementia. The potential benefits of these fatty acids are maximal in men over 60 and in dementias other than Alzheimer's disease.

Functional alterations in the brains of individuals with this condition coincide with the distribution of these neurons in the same brain. These neurons are responsible for filtering external information reaching the brain. Their functioning is altered in individuals with schizophrenia, which explains the majority of their symptoms. This discovery is the first time that this alteration can be identified as a possible origin of schizophrenic symptoms, and it opens the door to seeking new targeted treatments with fewer patient side effects.

An observational study conducted by researchers from Pompeu Fabra University and Hospital del Mar determines that the intradermal administration of the JYNNEOS vaccine against smallpox induces an efficient immune response that should protect people living with HIV from contracting the monkeypox virus.
Stanford University has released a new edition of its list, which considers the most cited scientists in various disciplines, divided into 22 fields of knowledge. This time, the Hospital del Mar and the Hospital del Mar Research Institute have achieved a record number, with 33 professionals in the ranking.
People with HIV have altered levels of a specific RNA molecule related to both aging and inflammation. This molecule remains altered even with antiretroviral treatment, indicating that their immune system remains affected despite receiving antiretroviral treatment and controlling the infection. The authors of the study, published in the Journal of Microbiology, Immunology, and Infection, suggest that the origin of this alteration is chronic inflammation caused by the infection, regardless of the treatment received by patients. Having this marker can be helpful in monitoring the evolution of patients and the effectiveness of the drugs they take to restore the normal functioning of their immune system.

33 new research projects received funding of up to 500,000 euros or up to one million euros in the sixth edition of the CaixaResearch Health Research call, promoted by the "la Caixa" Foundation. In total, 25.3 million euros in grants. The call supports basic, clinical, or translational research projects with scientific excellence and social impact in cardiovascular diseases, infections, oncology, and neurosciences. It also supports projects developing enabling technologies in these areas. Among the selected projects is one led by Dr. Toni Celià-Terrassa to advance the understanding of metastasis and its coevolution with the immune system. There are also two other projects with the participation of researchers from the Hospital del Mar, Dr. Víctor Pérez, and Dr. Arnau Busquets.
Researchers from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute have published a new article in Microbiology Spectrum proposing a novel approach to treating pneumonia caused by antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. The study suggests that increasing the dose of the antibiotic colistin may not only be ineffective, but could also increase patient mortality. For this reason, the researchers advocate for using nebulized administration of the treatment instead of intravenous administration. This approach achieves higher concentrations in the lungs, where the infection is located, without causing toxic colistin concentrations in the blood. The World Health Organization considers antibiotic resistance among the top 10 global public health threats.
